About the Foundation Programme – The next step…

Many people have been asking about the next step to take to deepen their meditation practice. We are delighted to invite you to discover how to make your practice deeper, more structured, more regular and more enjoyable.

Foundation Programme (FP) is an ongoing, weekly course on Buddhism and meditation. The course is suitable for anyone (who ideally have been coming to Jampel Centre meditaton classes and courses for a while) with interest in deepening their understanding of Buddhist meditation and wisdom.

The Programme therefore consists of a dynamic combination of teachings, meditation and discussion, all of which enable us to go deeper into the layers of meaning within each book that we study. All of this helps us to make real progress along our spiritual path. Each class consists of preliminary prayers, guided meditation and reading from the book with commentary and discussion.

There are many benefits to joining the Foundation Programme namely:

The Text We will be Studying- How To Understand the Mind

The book “How to Understand the Mind” offers deep insight into our mind, and shows how an understanding of its nature and functions can be used practically in everyday experience to improve our lives. This beautiful text is a practical guide to developing and maintaining a light, positive mind – showing how to recognize and abandon states of mind that harm us, and to replace them with peaceful and beneficial ones. In addition, it describes different types of mind in detail, revealing the depth and profundity of the Buddhist understanding of the mind. It concludes with a detailed explanation of meditation, showing how by controlling and transforming our mind we can attain a lasting state of joy, independent of external conditions.

This FP Taster Session programme will consist of 5 weeks of FP taster sessions from Friday 21 February until Friday 20 March. It is essential that enrollers attend alll the sessions (or most of them if unable to attend all) in order to have a clear understanding on how the Foundation Programme runs.

Furthermore this package will also allow people to attend all the weekly meditation classes, courses and retreats run by Jampel Centre for the duration of the month taster package (Feb 21 untill March 21 included).

The Teacher

This programme will be guided by James Baskerville, Resident Teacher at Jampel Kadampa Buddhist Centre.

James has been practising and teaching Kadampa Buddhism for over twenty years and has engaged in extensive meditation retreats, including silent retreat. He is especially known for his clarity, humour and inspirational presentation of Buddha’s teachings.

If you wish to deepen your experience of Buddha’s teachings and find real meaning in your life, you will enjoy the Foundation Program. Joining FP involves enrolling for a section of the book and trying to attend all the classes, one of which is an end-of-year exam. The programme is open to anyone interested in taking their meditation practice deeper.

No. Everyone is welcome, including beginners. All you need is the wish to improve yourself and the quality of your life.

No special clothing is required, come as you are.

No. The classes focus on meditation and teachings alone. You can choose to sit on a chair or meditation cushion.

We are a registered charity run entirely by volunteers, no-one receives a salary. The funds we receive are used to pay for our venues and operating expenses. Although we charge for classes we also offer low-income rates and no one will ever be turned away for lack of funds.
